Trails of Santa Claus, Inc. (TOSCI) Secretary/ Treasurer Marlene Bowen presented the Santa Claus Town Council with a check for $5,000 and a promise of up to $20,000 additional funds at the July meeting.
TOSCI’s Board committed a minimum donation of $15,000 to the Trails project by the July council meeting with the first payment of $5,000 made at Monday, May 9 Town Council meeting. The balance of the commitment (a minimum of $10,000) will be made at the July council meeting, with the actual amount determined by the success of a “Matching Funds Campaign”. The “Matching Funds Campaign” begins immediately and runs through June 25, 2016, TOSCI’s first anniversary. TOSCI will match all contributions up to a total of $10,000. With this match, TOSCI’s donation in July could be as high as $20,000, depending on contributions received.
TOSCI’s Board also endorsed the adoption of an ordinance passed by the Council to create a Maintenance Fund for the Trails. TOSCI requested that the funds it donated be appropriated with 80% to “Trails Construction” and the balance (20%) to the new Maintenance Fund.
TOSCI, a non-profit organization, is tasked with closing the gap between funds already committed to build the four biking and hiking trails that will connect various attractions in and around Santa Claus. Currently over 87% of the estimated $10 million has been raised through various state and federal grants and private donations. The Trails Project, when complete, will result in increased tourism, more retail establishments and safe recreational opportunity for residents.
TOSCI is also tasked with providing funds to maintain those trails once completed.
